What Happened in the Supreme Court

On June 26th 1997, the Supreme Court found the Communications Decency Act unconstitutional in a unanimous decision. (Some news services called it a 7-2 decision, but they were wrong. O'Connor and Rehnquist issued a separate opinion that concurred in part and dissented in part, but all 9 justices found the act unconstitutional).

We were in court when the case was argued, and were relieved, pleased, and happy when the decision was announced. We believe the decision was a pro-family one because it placed the responsibility for monitoring internet access with us, the parents. Our attorney, Bruce Ennis, was eloquent and masterful before the Court, and the Citizens Internet Empowerment Coalition did a great job at pulling everything together.

You can download the opinion from CIEC's web site at www.ciec.org , or follow the changing image on our home page. Transcripts of the March oral arguments are available here.
